Focus: Actionable steps to align MDM with HIPAA compliance.
Bridging the gap between data utility and regulatory compliance requires a proactive strategy. Here is how healthcare providers can move forward:
1. Implement Data Masking and De-identification: When using patient data for analytics or research within your MDM system, use de-identification techniques. If the data is not identifiable, it falls outside the scope of HIPAA, significantly reducing your risk profile.
2. Encryption at Rest and in Transit: HIPAA requires that ePHI be protected. Ensure your MDM solution utilizes industry-standard encryption for data stored in the database and data moving between systems.
3. Regular Risk Assessments: HIPAA mandates periodic risk analysis. Your MDM environment should be a primary focus of these assessments. Identify where data flows, where it is stored, and who has access to the "master" files.
4. Vendor Management: If you use a third-party MDM software provider, they are considered a "Business Associate." You must have a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) in place, and you must vet their security protocols to ensure they meet your internal standards.
